The only thing that flies faster than time is the progress of technology. If you’re curious about what the future might bring to the programming world, you’re in the right place. And as 2020 is not so far away, the trends and predictions for the future of programming, in particular, can be already set and analyzed.

Predictions may not give you a confirmed idea but they definitely guide you on your way to some soul searching while considering web development and programming. So, let us dig the few top web development and programming trends a little deeper and find out which trends will rule the world by 2020.

1. R Programming Language

R is a programming language, but it’s more of a standard bearer for the world’s current obsession with using statistics to unlock patterns in large blocks of data. R was designed by statisticians and scientists to make their work easier. It’s got most of what data scientists need to do data-driven science.

Many people end up using R inside an IDE as a high-powered scratchpad for playing with data. R Studio and R Commander are two popular front ends that let you load up your data and play with it. They make it less of a compile-and-run language and more of an interactive world in which to do your work.

2. Swift

Swift is a general-purpose, multi-paradigm, compiled programming language developed by Apple Inc. for iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, Linux, and z/OS. Swift is designed to work with Apple’s Cocoa and Cocoa Touch frameworks and the large body of existing Objective-C code written for Apple products.

It is built with the open source LLVM compiler framework and has been included in Xcode. On Apple platforms, it uses the Objective-C runtime library which allows C, Objective-C, C++ and Swift code to run within one program.

3. Arduino

The Internet of Things is coming. More and more devices have embedded chips just waiting to be told what to do. Arduino isn’t so much a new language as a set of C or C++ functions that you string together. The compiler does the rest of the work. Many of these functions will be a real novelty for programmers, especially programmers used to creating user interfaces for general computers.

4. Artificial Intelligence

AI and ML have given a new dimension to enterprise web development. Recent studies indicate that the AI and ML industry will experience a 70% growth by the end of 2019 and come 2020, another 20 to 30% growth can be expected, giving us clear indication of its dominance in web development.

The fact that global technology giants like Google and Microsoft, are looking at spending huge amount of money in AI and ML, should motivate many other big names to follow suit. According to a recent study, the Artificial Intelligence market will reach $153 billion in the years to come.

5. Chatbots

Chatbots have created a sensation in today’s digital transformation world. An E-commerce web portal is the best example which can give you an idea of how chatbots have changed the process of communication. Chatbots make your life very easy and enable you to take quick decisions. That’s the reason why, they are here to stay, for a long time to come.

As messaging platforms are getting more and more popular and companies are doing away with emails, the impact of chatbots on web design and web development can no longer be neglected. Creating a chatbot to communicate with humans and designing conversational UI will become an important trend for developers to catch by 2020. A great example of this is home assistants like Amazon Echo and Google home.

6. CUDA

Most people take the power of their video cards for granted. They don’t even think about how many triangles the video card is juggling, as long as their world is a complex, first-person shooter game. But if they would only look under the hood, they would find a great deal of power ready to be unlocked by the right programmer. The CUDA language is a way for Nvidia to open up the power of their graphics processing units (GPUs) to work in ways other than killing zombies or robots.

7. JavaScript

JavaScript helps developers to build clean, strong and responsive websites. With newer JavaScript frameworks in sight, we can certainly expect that in the years to come, JavaScript will continue to be the strongest base for programming. It is pertinent to note that JavaScript has been rising since 2016 and alone witnessed a growth of 97% in 2016. It is a super popular programming language primarily used to create web applications. The language also allows them greater control over the web interface. JavaScript accompanies a lot of the modern web and we can say this because today all modern web browsers support JavaScript without even the hassles of plugin software.

Currently ranked number one this year for the most popular language on Github. It will be the numero uno language for front-end development by 2020. Being the first client-side language, nearly everything you interact with on a website is due to JavaScript.

8. Internet of Things (IOT)

The Internet of Things has been some sort of a revelation in the digital revolution. The beauty behind this technology is providing network connectivity to non-internet connected objects, in order to facilitate. Prominent organizations have already started working on the API’s that developers can use, to communicate with these devices. It is projected that by 2020, the number of interconnected devices will be close to 30 billion. This huge figure gives a clear indication that IOT integration will be also on the rise.

Today the IoT controls every facet of your life, right from apps on your Smartphone to controlling your HVAC system. Also the wearable devices that we use for enabling text messaging, phone calls, and more has taken communication to a whole new direction. Again, thanks to internet of things.

9. Data will remain king

Data is the way we see in the internet. Light brings us information about the real world, but numbers tell us about everything online. Data gathering, collating, and parsing will continue to be one of the most important jobs for the enterprise. The decision makers need the numbers, and the programmers will continue to be tasked with delivering data in a way that’s easier to understand. This doesn’t mean the answers will be perfect. Context and intuition will continue to have a role, but the need to wrangle data won’t go away simply because a few folks predicted that Donald Trump wouldn’t be elected. This means more work for programmers, as there is no end in sight for our need to build bigger, faster, more data-intensive software.

These are the web development and programming trends we can look forward to, come 2020. Most of the changes are visible now itself and moving forward, we can only expect large scale developments leading to more communicative and responsive web development.

For developers entering or working in the field right now, it’s important to understand the architecture behind the tools and frameworks you are using to prepare yourself for the future.

There are lots of trends in this technology world. If I missed anything important, please tell me in comments.
